David Hand School of Teaching – MIHE

The Modawa Institute of Higher Education proudly launched the David Hand School of Teaching in 2025, marking a historic milestone for education in Oro Province. Named after the first Anglican Archbishop of Papua New Guinea, this new Teachers College is built upon the deep foundations laid by the early missionaries—who came to preach, teach, and heal. The Modawa Institute continues that mission today, nurturing future educators through a holistic and community-rooted approach.

The School of Teaching offers a Bachelor in Education (Primary), providing school leavers, especially those from rural and underserved areas, the opportunity to pursue professional teacher training right here in Oro. The inaugural cohort of 2025 includes students from across the province—many of whom completed their secondary education through FODE or other flexible learning pathways.

This program addresses a critical need for more qualified teachers in remote and local primary schools. With a strong emphasis on contextual and culturally relevant pedagogy, the program prepares graduates not just to teach, but to lead with purpose and inspire future generations.

Our vision is to equip local people to serve their communities as qualified, confident, and compassionate teachers, contributing directly to the development of Oro and the nation.

Why Study Teaching at Modawa?

  • Locally Accessible Tertiary Education: The first teacher training program based in Oro Province.

  • Church-Based, Mission-Driven: Rooted in the values of service, faith, and education.

  • Community Impact: Graduates are prepared to return and uplift their home communities.

The David Hand School of Teaching is a growing part of the Modawa Institute’s mission to serve through Education, Healthcare, and Theology. Like the Modawa Tree from which it draws its name, the Institute stands as a symbol of resilience, renewal, and rootedness in faith and community.
